Sharma Sounds Alarm on Growing Drug Crisis – FBC News

Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma outlined the serious consequences of drug abuse and highlighted the alarming increase in cases of addiction, withdrawal symptoms and associated health problems.

Sharma said during the Speaker’s debate on drugs that there is an increasing prevalence of substances such as tobacco, alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine and cannabis.

He emphasizes that the geographical isolation that once protected Pacific countries has now made them vulnerable to exploitation by transnational crime networks.

“Drug addiction and withdrawal symptoms are both difficult and, in severe cases, life-threatening. This sets the stage for drug addiction and the endless cycle of drug abuse. With the increase in drug and alcohol abuse, there has been an increase in STDs, HIV and AIDS, and the youth are the most vulnerable.”

Sharma also proposed a multi-pronged approach to combat the crisis, calling for drug testing not only at schools but also at sporting events, workplaces and police checkpoints.
