Nearly 80,000 pounds of butter recalled from Costco

The makers of Costco’s Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter quietly recalled nearly 80,000 pounds of the product last month, as advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Is there a recall for Costco butter?

Yes, it happened in October, per Food and wine. The ingredient was pulled from shelves because the labels of both the salted and unsalted Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream varieties failed to state that the product “contains milk,” an important allergy warning. The latest update is that, as of November 7the recall is considered a Class II recallmeaning that use of the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects,” according to the FDA.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Milk is one of eight foods responsible for the most severe allergic reactions in the United States. (It’s worth noting, however, that butter naturally contains milk.)

Which Costco Butter Was Recalled?

1,300 cases (worth approximately P46,800) of Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and 900 cases (worth approximately P32,400) of Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter were recalled. The expiration dates for the one-pound and four-stick packs range between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025. Here’s a more specific breakdown:

The FDA has not advised what to do if you buy a recalled package of butter. However, it is usually standard practice to throw it away or return it. The FDA has also not disclosed whether or not there have been any adverse reactions to the products at the time of writing.
