If you’re looking for an autumn day out before winter arrives, this pretty village could be the perfect place for you – and there are plenty more great places to stop and see along the way.

Audlem in Cheshire is a small but picturesque village close to the border between England and Wales.

Nearby you will find the Shropshire Union Canal Main Line, offering idyllic waterside walks.

For a small village, it is bursting with independent establishments, nestled along the streets lined with beautiful historic buildings.

At the central intersection you will find the beautiful and historic church of the village, a focal point in the area.

One person who attended St. James the Great Church Tripadvisor said: “The church stands on a prominent elevated position in the center of the village.

“It has beautiful architecture with an inspiring and neat interior. I especially enjoyed the stained glass windows, most of which date from the 19th century. Look out for the 1983 tapestry, which depicts the life of the community, past and present.

“A church information booklet can be purchased for £1. There were also postcards from the church for sale.”

According to the Manchester Evening News, this attractive village could be the ‘proudest’ village community in England. In winter the village is decorated with Christmas trees and twinkling lights that give it a festive feel.

If you want to stop at a village pub for a rest, a drink or a bite to eat, the Rising Sun Inn is a popular choice in the area.

One visitor Tripadvisor said: “I had lunch here with a friend. It’s a beautiful, old-fashioned style country pub with a lovely ambiance.

“We were welcomed by the staff who were friendly and helpful, there was a great choice of menus and drinks.

“It has affordable prices and a very clean restaurant and bathroom. The staff were attentive and helpful throughout the stay. Our meal was delicious and professionally presented – well worth a visit.”
